Syracuse, N.Y. - After 332 days, the Syracuse Crunch/Utica Comets rivalry has been renewed. On Saturday night the team’s kicked things off inside a cardboard cut-out and fan-less Upstate Medical University Arena for the first of a 14-game Galaxy Cup series.

Following a 3-2 win in Rochester in their season opener on Friday night, the Comets took on a hungry and high-intensified Syracuse Crunch in their home/season opener.

Scoring started for Syracuse just one minute into the first period. Gabriel Fortier scored his first professional career goal on a shorthanded two-on-one fast break with Boris Katchouk.

Midway through the period Otto Sommpi deflects a shot from Riley Stillman into the back of the net to give Syracuse an early 2-0 lead heading into the second period.

Alex Barre-Boulet and Henry Bowlby would open up second period scoring to give the Crunch a 4-0 lead throughout the majority of the frame. It wouldn’t be until 1:30 remaining in the second that Curtis McKenzie would score off of a backdoor feed from Lukas Jasek to earn the shorthanded goal and put Utica on the board.

The final 20 minutes was another two-goal scoring period for Syracuse. Fortier would score his second of the day, Ryan Lohin would score his first AHL goal which would give Syracuse a 6-1 lead, ultimately leading to the win.

Despite what’s shown on the scoreboard, Utica out-shot Syracuse 33-31 for the game.

Utica had numerous scoring opportunities but just couldn’t get in an offensive rhythm. Goaltender Sam Montembeault was a brick wall making 32 saves. This was also the Comets first set of back-to-back games in over 11 months.

The two teams will meet again on February 17 inside the Adirondack Bank Center for the Comets home opener. Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m.
