SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse is relieving people of the obligation to attend Sunday Mass, and encourages sick and elderly parishioners to stay home.
The following statement was released:
Masses throughout the Diocese of Syracuse will continue to be offered at this time. However, due to the serious health crisis caused by the coronavirus, Bishop Lucia hereby dispenses Catholics in the Diocese of Syracuse from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass beginning immediately until further notice (Code of Canon Law, c. 87). Those with underlying health conditions are especially encouraged to remain at home.
The diocese has released a response to coronavirus on its website, and the Rev. Douglas J. Lucia has issued new directives following health department guidelines.
Lucia is asking congregations to pray the Novena Prayer for an end to the coronavirus pandemic, and observe Mass on television or online if they cannot attend in church.
