SHERBURNE, N.Y. (UPDATED) -- An underwater dive team in Chenango County recovered the body of a teen police say went under the water and never resurfaced Wednesday evening.
Nicholas J. Russell, 18, of Smyrna, was pronounced dead at the scene.
State police responded to the initial report just after 5 p.m. Wednesday. The body was located by the New York State Police Underwater Recovery Team shortly after 8 p.m.
Police say Russell and three friends were swimming in the Chenango River when he started struggling to stay above water. A witness tried to help him, but he went under water and never came back up.
The recovery effort happened near State Route 80 and County Route 23 in the village of Sherburne.
New York State Police, the village of Sherburne Police Department, Chenango County Bureau of Fire and Sherburne Fire and North Norwich Fire assisted at the scene.
