The Utica communty came together Saturday to celebrate Juneteenth a week early.
A celebration was held at Kemble Park, and featured 3 on 3 basketball games as well as clothing, accessory and food sales. The event was organized by Hoops and Dreams in coordination with Motivated Minds.
Juneteenth is celebrated each year on June 19 to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States in 1865. On that date, US troops entered Galveston, Texas and informed the slaves that they were free, over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
The Utica Police Department cooked hot dogs for the event-goers as part of their community outreach efforts.
