UTICA, N.Y. - The CNY SPCA is investigating the Road to Home shelter on Broad Street in Utica.

The owner of the building has evicted tenant Kim Strong after a video of more than 100 dogs, showing their living conditions surfaced.

About 60 dogs remain at the shelter.

Liz Fox is the disaster response manager at the Nassau County SPCA. She was called in a couple of weeks ago by the founder of Road to Home, Elyse Giurco, to help with this situation.

"When I walked in two weeks ago, I was ready to be sick," Fox said. "Road to home actually was helping out with some of the animals up here, they needed a 501c3 so Road to Home agreed to work with Kim Strong with this situation and ended up taking over the whole building not knowing how many animals Kim had living here."

Fox says Strong has that many dogs because she kept taking more in.

"They say she's a trainer that specializes in aggressive dogs, all types of aggression," Fox said. "Many different agencies asked her not knowing other agencies were sending dogs and she wasn't truthful with anybody on how many dogs she had."

Fox says finding the dogs new homes is not the only problem.

"The DA wanted us out today, they just came in this morning and said we wanted to shut you down today, looks like we may have bought some time to finish getting these animals out," Fox said.

Fox says they have been inside the building cleaning and getting the dogs out as quickly and safely as possible.

"We've now taken over the animals that are here to try and make sure to find homes for all of them or back to wherever they came from if it's safe to go back," Fox said. "We just had a bunch leave today, two are going back to rescue, two are being adopted, and one is going to foster to adopt."

Fox says she hasn't seen Strong since Friday.

"Friday morning, I came in, she said she was going to be leaving at 1 o'clock and I asked her if she was just going to lunch and getting some rest and she said she was leaving for good," Fox said.

Road to Home is looking for volunteers to help clean the facility and find homes for the remaining animals. If you are able to help, you can send them an email at adopt@roadtohomerescue.org.
