Elks Lodges around the Mohawk Valley celebrate Flag Day

The Utica Elks Lodge and the Military of the Purple Heart CNY chapter celebrated Flag Day Thursday afternoon with their annual ceremony.

People gathered at the Purple Heart Memorial Park in Utica to honor the American flag.

Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente and Senator Joe Griffo were also in attendance as well as boys scouts and the New Hartford American Legion color guard.

There was a special raising of the flag to remember the fallen soldiers, followed by recognition awards to the Utica Elks Lodge and AMVETS Post.

The commander of the CNY chapter said it doesn't matter what is going on in the world politically, the purpose of today is simple.

"I would say this, I think the American flag is the most important thing to me and it's important to really everybody in the United States," said Joe Fraccola. "Regardless of what the NFL players do, that's their own business. This is America, and we honor the American flag. We're instructing children and people who attend here to understand what the flag is all about."
