UITCA, N.Y. -- A Utica company that's still family-run and spans more than a century was honored Thursday for that commitment and continued growth.
Senator Joe Griffo presented Empire Recycling, on North Genesee Street, in Utica, with the New York State Senate Empire Award. It honors business leaders who innovate and grow the economy.
The owners are humbled and grateful, but at the same time, proud, that their family’s generations-long commitment is being recognized.
"I go back generations, our company is 103 years old and my family, from the first time they got here in the 1880s have been a part of this community. We came from Lithuania to Utica, New York, and have been here ever since,” said Steven Kowalsky, with the company.
The Empire family of companies employs nearly 200 people in the Mohawk Valley and in 11 divisions, statewide.
