NEW YORK (AP) - Former federal prosecutor Preet Bharara says he's not running for New York attorney general for reasons including "the nature of politics at this moment."

Bharara discussed his decision on his podcast last week. He also cited "the difficulty of running for office in a way that would make (him) comfortable."

The filing deadline for candidates passed this month. Hopefuls include four Democrats and a Republican aiming to succeed Democratic former AG Eric Schneiderman, who resigned in May.

Bharara had been viewed as a possible contender. He hadn't said what party's nomination he might seek.

As a U.S. attorney, he was known for crusading against public corruption.

He was fired last year after refusing the Trump administration's request for resignations from its predecessor's appointees.
