Volunteer firefighter and cancer survivor Brian McQueen is the recipient of the 2017 Golden Trumpet Award.
This award was given by the Firemen's Association of the State of New York during the FASNY Legislative Conference in Albany on Sunday. McQueen was awarded for his for instrumental role in cancer legislation.
During his acceptance speech McQueen said:
"It has been an incredible journey from my cancer diagnosis in 2013 to the floor of the Assembly, where I was privileged to be when the cancer legislation was signed on June of this year. The creation of presumptive cancer coverage in New York would not have been possible without the dedication of so many other individuals who worked so hard to make this reality."
McQueen has helped to raise awareness of cancer in New York’s volunteer fire service and he was a powerful advocate for the new cancer legislation signed into law by Gov. Andrew Cuomo on October 22, 2017.
