UTICA, N.Y. -- On Wednesday, three members from Families for Safe Streets gathered on the corner of Oneida St. and the Memorial Parkway to honor those who lost their lives to fatal car crashes. This was the second day of their one-thousand mile tour across New York State to meet with lawmakers and hold rallies regarding road safety.
The group has personal and emotional ties to the cause, as Co-Founder, Amy Cohen and member, Rebecca Sonkin both lost family members to car crashes. Cohen says that despite her personal struggles with this affecting her loved ones, she uses it to educate other people, and hopefully prevent this from further happening.
"We pour our pain into making change so that this doesn't have to happen to everybody else."
Over the next two days, Families for Safe Streets is scheduled to make stops on Long Island and New York City.
