A father involved in a boating accident that killed his 12-year-old son last summer, has pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide.
In July of 2018, Francis R. Eckrich, 46, was driving a boat pulling his son, Kaden, and another boy behind it on a tube. While rounding a curve at a high rate of speed, Eckrich had to take evasive action to avoid hitting a pontoon boat.
According to New York State Trooper Jack Keller, while Eckrich was trying to avoid a collision, the tube flew outward and crashed into the pontoon boat while Kaden was still on it.
The other boy, also 12 years old, was able to jump before the tube made contact.
While a nurse on a nearby boat tried to intervene, Kaden ultimately died of injuries sustained in the collision.
Eckrich is scheduled to be sentenced by the Hon. Michael L. Dwyer on Nov. 20.
