WESTMORELAND, N.Y. – Fire Prevention Week starts Oct. 4, and the Westmoreland Fire Department has teamed up with State Farm to share fire safety toolkits with the community.
Fire crews will distribute the kits, which will include brochures, magnets, posters and other items.
This year, the campaign for Fire Prevention Week, which runs through Oct. 10, is “Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen,” encouraging people to take precautions when cooking.
According to the National Fire Prevention Association, nearly half of all house fires are started in the kitchen, with unattended cooking topping the list of causes.
The association reminds people to do the following to prevent kitchen fires:
- Keep a close eye on what you’re cooking; never leave cooking unattended
- Keep anything that can catch fire — oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains — at least three feet away from the stovetop.
- If you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol, don’t use the stove or stovetop.
