UTICA, N.Y. (UPDATED) – Utica Fire Chief Scott Ingersoll says 12 people were displaced following a fire at a two-family home on Neilson Street Tuesday afternoon.
The Utica Fire Department was called to 1125 Neilson St., between Mortimer and Eagle streets, just after 1:30 p.m. Assistance was requested shortly after.
Ingersoll said it was a difficult fire to fight, as the flames spread up the walls through the home all the way to the attic. He said the home was severely damaged by the smoke and flames.
Everyone inside was able to get out safely. Fire crews were initially told a 14-year-old may still be inside, so crew members searched both floors while heavy smoke was inside the house. No one was found inside the home at the time. Soon after, UFD confirmed the child they were looking for was at school.
One firefighter also suffered a cut to his hand due to falling debris, according to Ingersoll.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
