AVA, N.Y. -- Firefighters battled the wind and cold temperatures, while battling a house fire in Ava.

By the time NewsChannel 2 crews got to Webster Hill Road, smoke was billowing out of the house.

The fire started just before 11 p.m. Thursday night, and fire crews were on the scene well into the morning.

Neighbors WKTV spoke with were not exactly sure what had happened.

There is no word how many people were living at the home.

Fire officials say that the animals in the house did not make it out alive.

They say it may have been started by a wood stove.

The cause is still under investigation.
