VERONA, N.Y. -- A large house in Verona has been destroyed following a house fire Tuesday morning.

The fire broke out at a large home on Wood Creek Road around 9:40 a.m.

When firefighters from Verona and New London first arrived on the scene, firefighters started with an interior attack on the flames, dragging hoses into the home, but were pushed back.

With a dead end street and the lack of a water supply, the units on the scene continued to fight the fire from the outside as it continued to consume the house.

New London Deputy Fire Chief Timothy Fields says:
"We had a water supply problem here because we use a dry hydrant out of the Barge Canal, and we access it through the bicycle/ snowmobile trail, and there was so much snow we could not get to it because we don’t have regular fire hydrants, so we had to call a lot of tankers from other departments."

At one point, the fire broke through the roof and totally engulfed the home.

The road is closed at this time, and firefighters continue to pour in from surrounding districts.

The American Red Cross is providing 2 adults and 3 school-aged children with vouchers for food, clothing, and a place to stay, but Disaster Responder Steve Boddie tells us it looks like it’s going to be a long haul for this family.

"From what I’m reading off their body language, it’s just the shock of their home is destroyed. They’ve lost pretty much everything that they’ve worked so hard for."

No one was home at the time the fire started, and no injuries were reported.
