UTICA, N.Y. -- Tuesday is the first day political hopefuls can go door-to-door asking you to sign their petitions.
This is significantly earlier than years past, as the state and local primary date is now in June.
It's been streamlined with the federal primary to save money and increase voter participation.
Petitions are now due the first week of April for major party lines, and Independents have a little more time.
“If you go Independent, meaning it’s not affiliated with any one of the major existing parties that petition period starts. I believe the week after the filing period for the designated petitions,” said Anthony Fumarola, the Herkimer County Board of Elections Democratic commissioner.
Primary Day, this year, is June 25 and the general election is November 5.
