Fixing problems at the garage

Essential personnel are trying to minimize their exposure to the coronavirus, so it’s important for those businesses to take extra precautions to protect themselves and the public from the spread of germs.

The World Health Organization recommends washing hands often, if you have to cough, cough into your elbow, avoid touching your face, maintain a 6 foot distance between individuals, and stay home when you’re not feeling well. It’s all good advice, but the staff at Oriskany Garage Tire & Auto Service is going beyond these standard recommendations. Owner Rade Cavic explains some of what they're doing.

"Clean and disinfect vehicles before and after service to minimize the risk around that. We’ve also trained all our employees in the WHO’s (World Health Organization) recommendations to minimize the transmission of coronavirus, and it’s something that we’re reinforcing daily and holding each other accountable."

Not everyone is taking these kinds of precautions, but A&P Used Auto Parts Delivery Driver Shawn Brummett does see other garages participating in some kind of mitigation plan.

"A lot of them, I’d say about 80% of them at least have notes outside even if they don’t have stuff inside like these guys do with the cautionary and the six feet back there. They at least have a note on their front door stating honk or give us a call and we’ll come out to you so we can get things figured out essentially. Got a lot of places that have signs stating please stay 6 feet away, then some places that aren’t as on board with it."

While many of the policies are being used to keep the public from coming in contact with germs, Rade Cavic believes it’s also important to keep the employees from getting sick.

"We’ve increased the frequency of cleaning and sanitation, and also make sure that we are cleaning and disinfecting the critical touch points. Door knobs, light switches, counters, keyboards, mouse, phones, pens, credit card processing machines. Just the list goes on."

So if you do have to get your car fixed here at Oriskany Garage, at least you’ll know it’s a whole lot safer and cleaner going out than when it came in.
