MORRIS, N.Y. – The former treasurer for the Morris Central School District in Otsego County will not serve jail time, but will have to pay back the $34,000 she admitted to stealing from the district.
Kristina Hand, 47, was sentenced to two years of probation and 50 hours of community service, as well as the $34,000 in restitution.
In January, Hand admitted to stealing money from 2014 – 2020 while she worked as the district treasurer. She pleaded guilty to two counts of federal program theft for stealing money from a district that receives federal funds.
Hand said she stole $24,000 by depositing checks payable to the school district into bank accounts that she controlled. She also admitted to stealing at least $10,000 more by using the district’s Amazon account and credit cards to purchase items for her personal use.
Hand was formally charged in September of 2020.
