UTICA, N.Y. -- A plastic bag picked up during Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri's Quality of Life Sweep had four kittens in it.

The bag was found on the 1600 block of Lincoln Avenue, near Indium Corporation.

The cats, about five weeks old, are now at the Stevens Swan Humane Society.

The cats were in a plastic container, in the bag.

“It’s a touching story,” Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri said in a statement, “but it’s also a teachable moment. There’s no reason to leave your animals on the side of the curb. We have a great shelter here and we’re fortunate to have Stevens-Swan Humane Society. A lot of places don’t have an organization like Stevens-Swan, and the reason we have it is so we don’t see things like abandonment.”

There are three male cats and one female, and will be ready for adoption in three to four weeks.
