Newark, N.J. - After 65 minutes of play and four rounds in shootout, the Utica Comets earned a 6-5 victory over the Binghamton Devils at RWJ Barnabas Health Hockey House.
A trade-off of powerplay goals from Utica’s Kole Lind and Binghamton’s Ben Street opened up scoring. Comets would score two unanswered goals by Carson Focht and another powerplay goal by Lind to take a 3-1 lead to end the first period.
The Devils responded with back-to-back goals by Mikhail Maltsev and Michael Vukojevic. Dakota Joshua and John Stevens connected on a 2-on-1 to score a shorthanded goal. Binghamton’s Nikita Okhotiuk scored late in the second to tie the game again at 4-all.
Nolan Stevens and Ben Street would trade goals in the third frame.
It would take an overtime period, key saves by Jake Kielly plus four rounds of a shootout for Utica to earn the 6-5 win.
Kielly made 29 saves on 34 shots through 65 minutes of play and 4 saves in the shootout.
Up next, the Comets end a 3-game road slate and open up home play at the Adirondack Bank Center to host the Syracuse Crunch on Wednesday, February 17 at 7:00 p.m.
