WHITESBORO, N.Y. – The Genesis Group held a ceremony Friday to commemorate the 19th anniversary of 9/11, urging people to ‘never forget’ those who were lost.
The organization usually hosts a prayer breakfast on Sept. 11 each year, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, they had to reimagine the memorial event.
The ceremony was invite-only, and closed to the public to avoid a large gathering, which is prohibited by the state during the pandemic.
Executive Director Ray Durso says remembering this day helps people appreciate living in America.
“We all take life for granted very often, and I think we all need a reminder more than once a year to appreciate our lives -- to appreciate being American, our freedom. I mean, you look at what's going on around us in our world, in our country right now; we have to remember a day like today, those that put the sacrifice so we can have this freedom,” he said.
Assemblyman Brian Miller also attended the event as the keynote speaker, and spoke about his battle with coronavirus earlier this year.
The ceremony was held outside of Hart’s Hill Inn in Whitesboro.
