Go the Distance releases new schedule after Boilermaker announces plans to go virtual

Go the Distance, the annual training program for first-time Boilermaker participants, will also go virtual this year ahead of the new event, which is scheduled for September.

UTICA, N.Y. – Boilermaker Road Race organizers announced Tuesday that the in-person race would be canceled this year, and offered registrants the option to participate virtually.

Go the Distance, the annual training program for first-time Boilermaker participants, will also go virtual this year ahead of the new event, which is scheduled for September.

The race normally takes place in July, but was postponed until September when the coronavirus pandemic began. Officials had hoped it would be safe to hold the event at a later date, but ultimately decided to cancel the in-person race due to continuing safety concerns and restrictions on mass gatherings.

The schedule for Go the Distance was altered after the initial postponement, and adjustments were made to meet guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Joe Wilczynski, the head trainer, started updating the program to limit the number of runners and ensure the safety of those participating.

The committee started accepting applications in March, but has not yet chosen the Class of 2020.

However, Wilczynski has released the virtual training schedule, which will begin Monday, June 22. See full details below.

Monday June 22, 2020 - 1.8-Mile Training Run

  • Location- Mohawk Valley Community College Parking Lot across from the tennis Courts.
  • Course - Turn right onto the Parkway, right on Harrison Avenue, right on James Street, right on Sherman Drive, and back to MVCC parking lot.
  • Wednesday: Training Distance - 2 Miles.
  • Saturday: Training Distance - 2.3 Miles.

Monday June 29, 2020 - 2.5-Mile Training Run

  • Location - Start line of the Boilermaker Road Race (ECR Boilers)
  • Course - Start line of the Boilermaker, follow Culver Ave to the Utica Armory, U-Turn at Utica Armory, back down Culver Avenue to starting line.
  • Wednesday: Training Distance - 2.3 Miles.
  • Saturday: Training Distance - 2.7 Miles.

Monday July 6, 2020 - 3-Mile Training Run

  • Location - Start at the Finish line of the Boilermaker.
  • Course - Left onto York Street, Right on Noyes Street, Left on Graham Street, Right on Champlin Avenue, Right on Highland Avenue, left on Inman Place, right on Whitesboro Street, Right on York Street, right into MVPC Campus Parking Lot.
  • Wednesday: Training Distance - 3.2 Miles.
  • Saturday: Training Distance - 3.5 Miles.

Monday July 13, 2020 - 4-Mile Training Run

  • Location- Start line of the Boilermaker Road Race (ECR Boilers)
  • Course-Start line (Culver Ave), run to the corner of Culver Avenue and Sherman Drive. U-Turn at end of Culver Avenue and Sherman Drive and then back down Culver Avenue to Starting line.
  • Wednesday: Training Distance - 4.3 Miles.
  • Saturday: Training Distance - 4.5 Miles.

Monday July 20, 2020 - 4.7-Mile Training Run

  • Location- Start at the Finish Line of the Boilermaker
  • Course- Left onto York Street, right on new Burrstone Road (Path), right on Champlin Avenue, right on Highland Avenue, left on Inman Place, right on Whitesboro Street, right on York Street, right into MVPC Campus parking lot.
  • Wednesday: Training Distance - 4.5 Miles.
  • Saturday: Training Distance - 4.7 Miles.

Monday July 27, 2020 - 5-Mile Training Run

  • Location- Start line of the Boilermaker Road Race (ECR Boilers)
  • Course-Start line (Culver Ave) follow Boilermaker course to rennis courts.
  • Thursday: Training Distance - 5 Miles.
  • Saturday: Training Distance - 5.5 Miles.

Monday Aug. 3, 2020 - 6-Mile Training Run

  • Location- Start line of the Boilermaker Road Race (ECR Boilers)
  • Course- Start line (Culver Ave) follow Boilermaker course, to Murnane Field parking lot.
  • Wednesday: Training Distance - 5.5 Miles.
  • Saturday: Training Distance - 6.2 Miles.

Monday Aug. 10, 2020 - 7-Mile Training Run

  • Location- Start line of the Boilermaker Road Race (ECR Boilers)
  • Course-Start line (Culver Ave) follow Boilermaker course to Utica College Parking lot across from St. Luke’s Hospital.
  • Wednesday: Training Distance-6.5 Miles.
  • Saturday: Training Distance-7.2 Miles.

Monday Aug. 17, 2020 - 7.5-Mile Training Run

  • Location- Start line of the Boilermaker Road Race (ECR Boilers)
  • Course-Start line (Culver Ave) follow the Boilermaker course pass Utica College to Champlin Ave Plaza Parking Lot.
  • Wednesday: Training Distance - 7 Miles.
  • Saturday: Training Distance -7.5 Miles.

Monday Aug. 24, 2020 - 8-Mile Training

  • Location- Start line of the Boilermaker Road Race (ECR Boilers)
  • Course-Start line (Culver Ave) follow Boilermaker course, pass Champlin Avenue parking lot to first light on Champlin Avenue/Caroline Street, U-Turn at light, Back up Champlin Avenue into Champlin Avenue parking lot.
  • Wednesday: Training Distance-7.5 Miles.
  • Saturday: Training Distance-6.5 Miles.

Monday Aug. 31, 2020 - 9.3-Mile Training Run

  • Location- Start line of the Boilermaker Road Race (ECR Boilers)
  • Course-Start line (Culver Ave) follow the Boilermaker course, right on Highland Avenue, left on Inman Place, right on Whitesboro Street, right on York Street, Right into MVPC Campus parking lot.
  • Wednesday: Training Distance-6.5 Miles.
  • Saturday: Training Distance -7.0 Miles.

Monday Sept. 7, 2020 - 3.1-Mile Training Run
Location- Start at the Finish line of the Boilermaker
Course- Left onto York Street, Right on Noyes Street, left on Graham Street, right on Champlin Avenue, right on Highland Avenue, left on Inman Place, right on Whitesboro Street, right on York Street, Right in MVPC Campus parking lot.
Wednesday: Training Distance -3 or 4 Miles (choice)

Utica Boilermaker Road Race - 9.3 Miles

  • Pick three training days that work with your schedule.
  • After week six, try to experience one-way training runs. It is a great experience to perform and experience the benefits of one-way training runs especially on the course you are training for.
  • Car-pooling will be required.
