The race for the Republican bid in the 19th congressional district is a close one, with Ola Hawatmeh leading opponent Kyle Van De Water by just 4%, with 100% of precincts reporting Tuesday.
The winner will likely come down to absentee votes, after thousands of ballots were requested across the district due to the coronavirus pandemic. More than 7,000 absentee ballots were sent out in Otsego County alone.
With all results from early and in-person voting reported, Hawatmeh has 5,502 to Van De Water’s 5,027.
Absentee ballots are expected to take longer this year than in the past, due to the volume. Results are expected in July.
The winner of this race will face incumbent Antonio Delgado in November.
