America's Greatest Heart Run and Walk is one of the biggest events of the year, and it wouldn't be possible without the help of the volunteers.
Some volunteers, like Audrey Malone, say they love to volunteer.
"I have been a volunteer for 20 years," Malone said. "I volunteer because a friend of our daughter's was diagnosed at birth with a heart defect."
Like many, Malone has personal reasons to be apart of the Heart Run. She volunteered at the registration event at Adirondack Diner and Lanes in Barneveld.
"Her name is Victoria Swider and I have volunteered for Team Victoria," Malone said. "They have raised a lot of money that has gone back to the community for helping patients here in the area and the research that is done here locally, there's a lot of people who have benefited from it."
To date, Team Victoria has raised $685,000.
Malone says this event helps people learn how to live healthier lives.
"The young people, as far as giving them the opportunity to get information for healhty life style changes," Malone said. "Getting tested before an event happens."
Malone says being a part of an event like this is important for so many reasons. You don't have to have a personal connection and it doesn't have to be a long term commitment, but it offers the chance to give back to the community and make a difference.
"There's a lot of events that lead up to this, they need volunteers all the time, all year round," Malone said.
If you're interested, there are plenty of volunteer opportunities.
