Hot and humid weather is expected today with a Heat Advisory in place.
This Heat Advisory is for Southern Oneida, Southern Herkimer, Madison, Chenango and Otsego Counties from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today. Highs are expected to reach the lower 90s, which is 10 degrees above normal for this time of year in Utica. Dew points will be in the low to mid 70s, which is a very high level of humidity. This type of atmosphere begins to feel tropical.
With high humidity, it makes the air temperature feel hotter than it actually is. This is called the heat index. Today the heat indices are expected to be in the mid to upper 90s.
This can cause health concerns, especially for sensitive individuals. If you have asthma or any other conditions aggravated by the heat, be especially careful today. Don't perform any strenuous activity or stay outdoors for long periods of time. Stay hydrated and find shade if you're going to be outside.
Also, wear a hat and sunscreen and keep a water bottle handy. You may want to check on your neighbors especially if they live alone or are elderly. If you are going to walk you pets, make sure they walk in the grass or a shaded area. The sidewalk and pavement can burn their paws in less than one minute in these conditions.
