Parents throughout the Rome School District can now track where their children’s school bus is before it gets to their house and throughout the day. They just have to download an App called ‘Here comes the bus.’ You simply download the app to your smartphone, tablet, or computer. Log in with a secure pass code and your student’s identification number, and then it’s just a matter of setting how far in advance you want to be notified when the bus will arrive. It’s a great tool for parents, but Rome City School District Transportation Supervisor Andy Thompson tells us the school district benefits as well.
"In a lot of cases I have parents telling me the bus comes at a different time every day. Naturally I want to find out why that’s happening ok. Is it because I’ve done something wrong, or a driver’s not following the route instructions accordingly, or he had to go back for a kid. There’s a number of factors that go into that, but we’re trying to iron out those wrinkles. We’re trying to reduce the overall ride time for the kids as well."
Knowing exactly when the bus is going to arrive at your door allows the parents and students to plan accordingly, but there may be times when the bus schedule will change.
"Now through the year you know we do get changes. We get new kids added. We get that drop, that change, addresses change, or they’re going to a babysitter, or no longer ride the bus, and naturally every change like that is like domino’s. It has an effect on the bus route and somebody else’s pick-up of drop-off times."
The App also notifies you when the bus has or hasn’t arrived at the school. It’s one nice feature for keeping parent’s minds at ease.
"Technology is just moving in that direction. People want information, and it’s kind of a helpful tool for parents. Parents always want to know where their kids are. The only part of the equation that comes out is if the kid doesn’t get on the bus. We’re tracking the bus, we’re not tracking the kids."
If knowing when your kids get on and off the bus isn't enough, the App is absolutely free.
