HERKIMER – In an effort to aid students in need, Herkimer College is debuting a new project this fall called The General's Cupboard, a place where students can access free non-perishable food and select toiletry items.
According to college officials, surveys have revealed troubling numbers concerning the level of hunger on college campuses.
"Food insecurity is a big issue on college campuses. It's been estimated that about 30 percent of college students have been hungry, have not had enough food, at some point," said Rebecca Ruffing, director of public relations at the college.
Ruffing says faculty and staff, as well as the Walmart Distribution Center in Marcy, have donated items for the project. Students can access The General’s Cupboard using their student ID starting this fall semester.
