Herkimer, N.Y. - Herkimer College athletics are expected to return for the spring season, with the school announcing it will plan to have several of it's sports teams participate in intercollegiate competition.

This comes after the college previously postponed or canceled many of its sports seasons over the course of the fall and winter.

"We are committed to providing our student-athletes with a safe competition experience, and to collaborative efforts in support of our student-athletes," said Donald Dutcher, Herkimer College Dean of Students and Director of Athletics.

The Generals teams expected to compete include many traditional spring sports, as well as, various traditionally in fall or winter sports seasons. These are baseball, softball, men's and women's track and field, men's and women's golf, men's and women's bowling, men's and women's soccer, women's tennis, and men's lacrosse.

Also competing in the spring are the Generals' men's and women's esports teams, which the school has announced will become official NJCAA intercollegiate teams this season. In the fall semester, the Herkimer esports club team had participated in several SUNY tournaments.

Herkimer's decision to return to play comes after collaborative efforts among SUNY community colleges, using NJCAA 2021 sports guidelines to create a plan for the safe resumption of sports.

SUNY community colleges will adopt requirements that each member school will be expected to follow in order to be permitted to compete. The requirements will be determined along with the guidance set forth by the CDC, New York State government, SUNY governing body, and local health departments.

The ability to participate is also based on the conditions of the coronavirus pandemic at the time of intended competition, and that it allow for student-athletes to compete safely.

Herkimer College will hold a virtual information session on Wednesday, Jan. 20 at 6 p.m. to discuss its athletics programs and its intentions for the spring 2021 season.
