The Herkimer County Sheriff is in the final stages before opening up the new Correctional Facility. The State Commission of Corrections will still have to approve all the new policies and procedures at the jail before granting them a certificate of occupancy. The Sheriff is hoping to open the jail between the third and fourth week of April. Every corrections officer that works in the jail must be trained to perform any work throughout the facility. Herkimer County Sheriff Scott Scherer spoke about what has to be done before opening the jail.
"The State requires us to do training, so every officer that we have has to have 80 hours of training. So we put together 2 week increments where our corrections officers can go through the training, and right now we’re on our 3rd group, and we have 2 more groups to go, so we’re just a little bit past half way."
Once the new facility opens up the Sheriff will have to submit a jail closing plan that the State must approve.
