Herkimer, NY - Herkimer County Community College held a virtual commencement for the class of 2020.
It was not the commencement ceremony that the class of 2020 envisioned but, they were celebrated immensely today as they turned the tassel together, virtually.
This ceremony is definitely one to remember.
428 graduates were sent caps and gowns, honor stoles and cords and were asked to send pictures of themselves dressed up so they can be used as their names are called.
The ceremony was conducted by Isabella Crandall, Chairwoman of the College Board of Trustees and the national anthem was delivered by Cassandra Dolan of Rome, NY.
President Cathleen McColgin accompanied the presentation of awards with Provost Michael Oriolo and Dean of Students Donald Dutcher. Only a handful of college personnel were in the auditorium.
Live and recorded speeches were included by the student government.
“Speaking as one of your fellow classmates, I know it wasn't easy between the waking up early for classes, staying up late, the endless studying, the homework sessions and all of these online classes. It's been crazy and it's pretty amazing that we've made it this far,” said Briana Hoskins, Student Government President.
Other New York state elected officials also spoke at the ceremony including Charles Schumer, US State Senator for New York who looked at the silver lining.
“(For parents) While this day may be tempered by worries about the future at least there's one silver lining. You're not seated way back in the balcony. You got to sit next to your son or daughter, give them a hug as they receive a diploma and become an adult before your very eyes. Congratulations.”
