Herkimer, N.Y. - Herkimer County Legislature Chairman Vincent Bono has issued a State of Emergency for Herkimer County.
Bono says the main reason for doing so is so that school districts in the county that close for an extended period of time will become eligible for emergency funding, "In order for the schools to secure that funding, the county has to have a state of emergency and that’s what we did. It just covers everything in case they need to clean the schools, lunches, things like that."
Bono is urging residents to listen to all local, state and federal recommendations and protocols to ensure that you and your family are protect from this threat, "We are in constant contact with state officials and working with them to provide vital assistance to the community. Avoid crowded areas and maintain clean practices. As of this posting, there is only one confirmed case in our county. That person has been released from the hospital and is recovering at home."
All of the school districts in the county will close beginning Monday and will remain closed for approximately four weeks for the safety of the students and faculty.
Bono says all county departments will remain open until further notice.
