HERKIMER, N.Y. – Herkimer County officials joined together for a press conference Friday to update residents on the county’s response to coronavirus.
Vincent Bono, chairman of the Herkimer County Legislature, says the county has not been released the locations of positive cases for privacy reasons, and to prevent people from flocking to less affected areas.
Bono said the county is also working with other localities on a collective plan to restart the region. He also wants to work closely with businesses on a reopening strategy, since they drive much of the local economy.
“We're going to be picking a few of those business leaders and asking them what they want to see done and do this a safe way. You know we certainly don't want to jump into this 100%. We know we have to do this in a ramped up, slow, methodical procedure, and that's what we're going to do, and make sure and maintain a safety level that's paramount for the community,” said Bono.
Director of Herkimer County Emergency Services, John Raymond, also spoke at the briefing, saying the state has sent cloth masks to the county for public distribution.
Raymond says the priority is to give masks to vulnerable populations, so they have provided the face coverings to places like food banks and the Office of the Aging.
