HERKIMER, N.Y. - There's a new team to cheer for in town as the Herkimer Originals get set for its inaugural season, which begins with the opener on Oct. 30.

Nicknamed the "OGs," the Originals will play in the American Basketball Association (ABA), a minor league semi-pro league with over 100 teams all across the nation.

Herkimer will be playing in the Northeast Division with teams from New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Pennsylvania.

The team is made up of 18 players, with 12 allowed to dress on game day. Most of the players on the team are from the area and have played collegiate or some form of professional basketball in the past.

The season consists of a 26-game schedule, with 13 home and 13 away games, and goes from Oct. 30 to Mar. 6, with playoffs and a chance at a berth in the national championships to follow.

The Originals will play all of its home games at Herkimer College, except for a Nov. 27 contest against the Hornell Bulls, which will be played at Notre Dame High School.

Tickets for home games are $5 for kids, $9 general admission, with VIP tickets available for $18, and floor seats for $45.

The inaugural season opener will be on Saturday, Oct. 30 against the Roc City Lions, with kids dressed in Halloween costumes receiving free admission to the game.

There will be fun Halloween activities and candy given out throughout the game as well.

The team name was thought up by none other than rock legend Alice Cooper, a friend of team founder and owner, Scott Flansburg.

Flansburg said the two were on the golf course when he found out he got the rights from the ABA to start a franchise.

The story goes that Cooper came up with the name "Originals" immediately, based on the fact that the first iron basketball rim was cast in Herkimer, and the first organized basketball game may have been played in Herkimer in February 1891.

In fact, when Cooper came to the area to play at the Stanley Theater in Utica recently, he came onto the stage for the final few songs wearing a Herkimer Originals jersey (pictures in story gallery).

Members of the Originals said they hope to bring an exciting and competitive brand of basketball to the area with family friendly atmosphere.
