Herkimer, N.Y. - February 7, 2021 is the 130th anniversary of the first basketball game played by the Herkimer 9 team in 1891 in Herkimer, NY.
In celebration of the game's anniversary the Herkimer 9 has announced that the American Basketball Association is bringing a team to Herkimer.
According to a press release by the Herkimer 9, the team will be named the 'Herkimer Originals' and is expected to tip-off in the fall of 2021 prefacing the construction of its home stadium in Downtown Herkimer.
Until then, at least for its first season, the team will play all home games at Herkimer College. The College and Herkimer 9 work together on a number of projects to unite the campus and Downtown Herkimer.
The Herkimer 9 Initiative program (www.herkimer9.org) was founded by Herkimer native Scott Flansburg, known as “The Human Calculator,” who along with a group of partners adopted the Village’s Master Plan 2020 adopted in 2018 to revitalize the downtown area.
This includes an event center and stadium filled with about 2,500 seats added on Main Street adjacent to the world’s largest basketball and the YMCA where the first game was played.
According to Herkimer 9’s statement, also included in the initiative is the vision to bring organic economic growth through recreation and retail and providing STEAM-focused education, research and jobs to Mohawk Valley residents.
The current American Basketball Association known as “the people’s league” is a relaunch of the original ABA which was founded in 1967 and merged with the NBA in 1976 after nine seasons.
