FISHKILL, N.Y. – A brush fire swept across Mount Beacon along the Hudson River near Fishkill on Monday.
According to police, the fires started near Dutchess Junction and Breakneck Tunnel.
Hikers had to evacuate the area as the fire spread hundreds of acres across the mountain.
Police say cars were destroyed and some main roads are closed.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
Brush fire season usually begins around the second or third week of March, but this year fires were reported as early as the second week of February.
Officials say dry vegetation from last year and the windy conditions of spring have created a higher risk of fire. Officials say the fires could continue until there is enough tree cover for shade.
