An excessive heat warning is in effect for the lower elevations of Central New York. A heat advisory is in effect for the higher elevations. The heat index is expected to climb above 100° for many areas.
While this level of heat and humidity is not unprecedented, it's enough to cause problems. Folks that have a low tolerance to heat should take it easy and stay indoors over the next few days. Those that do plan on enjoying the outdoors should make sure to stay hydrated and wear plenty of sunscreen. Here are signs of heat illness:
Thunderstorms are possible during this stretch of heat. A few storms are possible Friday afternoon and evening. Saturday does look dry, with the heat dome in place. Sunday looks to bring the best chance of storms as a cold front rolls through the region. Storms that develop over the next few days could bring torrential downpours and gusty winds.
The heat and humidity look to break on Monday. There's no sign of this level of heat returning anytime soon.
