A year ago, the fate of Vernon Downs was uncertain. Fast forward to now and no question about it and no weather delays, the 2018 racing season has officially begun.
It was a great crowd on hand at Vernon Downs for opening night. A little chilly outside but the sun made a guest appearance, it's been a while since we've seen that bright shiny thing in the sky, a symbol of the new race season perhaps.
Most people watched from the inside as they placed their bets and rooted on their horse. Coming to the track is a yearly tradition people always look forward to.
"Oh geez, since how long? 40 years now," said race fans Norm and Martin Lindfield. "40, I've been coming to these things since I was 16 and I'm 58, and I'm 72. It's usually the same poeple all the time, as it goes on unless they have specials like in the afternoon or dollar night, theres a lot of people on dollar night."
"It's just a nice, clean track and you don't spend a lot," said race fan Richard Anderson. "We only bet two dollars a race so I mean it's a nice night, we go get the buffet and of course we got the fireworks tonight. Hey, good deal!"
So a smooth start to the 2018 race season, action resumes Saturday night.
