ILION N.Y.- An Ilion Funeral Home has been serving the community for a century.
Applegate Funeral Home located on West Street is celebrating 100 years of service.
The Funeral Home was established by Clayton Applegate and his wife Marjorie. They established the first location on Railroad Street (now known as Central Ave). They later moved to a larger home at 81 second street in Ilion in 1924, where they conducted funeral services until 1938. That year they moved to the West Street location where they are now.
50 Years later Donald J. Applegate the grandson of Clayton and Marjorie is now the general manager and proud to keep his family’s tradition alive.
"My father and my uncle continued the funeral home in the second generation and then I started in 1969, 50 years ago. Full time as manager here, and continued until now, and we have the help of my oldest son Mark and actually two of my twin grandsons are now working in the business while they are in college." said Donald J. Applegate the current General Manager of Applegate Funeral Home in Ilion.
Ilion Mayor Brian Lamica was on hand to present Donald and his wife Judy a proclamation, and to dedicate the original site at 81 Second Street as the Applegate Family Memorial Park.
