ILION -- Just a couple weeks after the boilermaker, comes a 5k race in Ilion.

The Ilion "5K Around Town Road Race/Walk" took place Saturday as a part of the annual Ilion Days.

the Ilion community came out to run, and although there were a few challenges throughout the race, the community stuck together and ultimately persevered!

This year the race saw it's first wheelchair racer, Ilion Native Devon Henry, who finished strong despite a minor setback.

"I had a little minor fall, but I was able to recover pretty well," Henry said.

Henry says he loves being able to participate in community events and hopes to have more wheel chair racers next year.

"It's all about inclusion with me," Henry added. "I've always been about adaptive inclusion and with adaptive sports and the way it's impacted my life, if I can put a smile on somebody else's face it makes me feel good."

The race had runners of all ages. The youngest runner was seven-years-old, while the oldest runner was 70. There were even the largest number of children runners including, Orion Bliss who won a medal on his first time racing, and faced a few challenges as well.

"It was really fun," Bliss said. "Near the end I pushed myself so hard, I accidentally puked'

After race directors had to re-rout the race due to wires and a pole being down on Barringer Road, the race still went on without a hitch.

"We've always called it the 'Ilion Days Around Town Race' and so this year we were a little more around town than normal," Race Co-Director Laurie Scharett said. "Sometimes we tend to see the negative things, and everything that happens during Ilion Days, I can say it's fun. It's easy going so it's nice to see everybody pull together. It gives a little bit of a positive spin on things that sometimes we get to caught up in negative."

The winners in each age category recieved medals.

The Ilion Days continues Sunday for the last day of the event, which include a car show, and a ducky race.
