ILION, N.Y. -- An Ilion man is facing welfare fraud charges after allegedly stealing thousands in excess benefits.

Authorities say Thomas Mitchell, 48 of Ilion, was arrested for grand larceny, welfare fraud, and offering a false instrument for filing.

He allegedly received $2,500 worth of benefits that he wasn't entitled to receive over a period of more than 2 years.

The Herkimer County Sheriff Office Welfare Fraud Unit partnered with the Herkimer County Department of Social Services in the investigation.

Mitchell was charged and released on an appearance ticket.
