UTICA – The inmate accused of brutally attacking a female corrections officer at Midstate Correctional Facility back in April briefly appeared in Oneida County Court this morning.

The state Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association (NYSCOPBA) says that on April 2, 33-year-old Chaz Robinson – a convicted rapist who stands at 6 feet 6 inches tall and weighs 220 pounds – ambushed a female corrections officer at the medium-security prison when he allegedly walked into the officer’s station with the blanket from his bed, threw it over the officer’s head and then groped, mauled, punched and kicked her.

The officer screamed, but the door – which automatically locks when it’s shut – was closed and she could not easily be heard. The officer was then able to activate the emergency alert device on her radio and summon help.

NYSCOPBA officials say that despite her injuries, the officer chased after Robinson in order to positively identify him. She was then taken to a local urgent care to be treated for her bruises and abrasions.

Robinson is charged with first-degree sexual assault, unlawful imprisonment and second-degree assault. He was support to report on a plea offer from the Oneida County District Attorney’s Office today in court, but his attorney expressed concern about his mental capacity and the judge ordered a psychiatric exam.

About two dozen corrections officers were in court today to show support for their colleague.

“They feel very strongly that she should have the support from all of us,” said Scott Carpenter, Central Region vice president for NYSCOPBA. “We just want to be here and stand with her in her time of need.”

In 2012, Robinson was convicted of first-degree rape in Monroe County for luring a woman into an abandoned house, punching her in the face repeatedly and raping her. He was sentenced to five years in prison, and he was sent back to prison earlier this year after violating his parole.

Following the attack in April, Robinson was moved to Five Points Correctional Facility.

Robinson is due back in court on January 10 for the result of the psychiatric exam.
