VERNON, N.Y. -- The intersection of Youngs Road and Churton Road in Vernon was closed Sunday after a vehicle struck a telephone pole.
Oneida County sheriff's deputies, state police, and the Vernon Center Fire Department responded just after 7 a.m.
When deputies arrived they had found 42-year-old Michael Williamson's GMC pickup truck off of the road.
The sheriff's department said that Williamson swerved out of his lane after a dog ran in the middle of the road.
Williamson then struck the telephone pole along with a neighbor's mailbox to avoid hitting the animal.
The crash caused the top portion of the telephone pole to break free and become suspended in the air next to active power lines.
National Grid was on the scene for several hours making repairs to the telephone pole.
Williamson was checked out by paramedics and was determined to be alright.
Williamson was given a citation and expected to return to Vernon Town Court at a later date.
No injuries from the dog have been reported.
