UTICA - A Yorkville man’s murder retrial is coming to a close and his fate now lies in the jury’s hands.
Ricky Woods Jr. is charged with second-degree murder in connection to the shooting death of Jamal Mathis on Dec. 19, 2015. Police found Mathis dead of several gunshot wounds in a backyard on Leeds Street, allegedly following a party.
Back in Nov. 2017, Woods’ first murder trial ended in a hung jury on the murder charge, but he was found not guilty on weapons charges. Woods’ murder retrial began on June 22, and both the prosecution and defense made their closing arguments on Monday, July 2 in Oneida County Court.
The jury was presented with the case following closing arguments, but they adjourned for the day before coming to a verdict.
Jury deliberations will resume at 10 a.m. Tuesday.
