UTICA, N.Y. – Keep Mohawk Valley Beautiful launched its 2021 Clean & Green campaign Wednesday, kicking off the 20th annual effort to clean parks and public spaces throughout the region.
To participate, groups can register in ‘quaran-teams’ and work together to pick up litter in their local parks and neighborhoods.
The official kick-off event will be held at Hanna Park in Utica on Saturday, April 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Quaran-teams can pick up materials during the event.
Participants should also wear personal protective equipment like face coverings and gloves while out picking up litter.
Stephen Smith, executive director of the Mohawk Valley Economic Development District, says volunteers typically pick up more cigarette butts than any other kind of litter.
"Our biggest form of litter is cigarette butts. That is the biggest form of litter we're trying to take care off,” he said. “But, people just need to take a look at their surroundings, take a look at their little area of the world, their neighborhoods and see the litter. After the snow melts, you really see the litter pop up.”
