Keeping your home warm isn't just about making heat, it is about keeping the heat inside.
Insulation can help control the durability, comfort, and cost of your home. Making sure you have proper insulation, especially in the winter months is important.
We spoke with the experts over at Standard Insulating and they tell us a good place to start is your attic. Heat rises, so you want to make sure you have good insulation from top to bottom.
Amy Gallagher, Standard Insulating's customer relationship manager says to pay attention to the warning signs of poor insulation, such as snow melting on your roof. You can also feel your walls and outlets around your home for cold air.
Gallagher says if you feel like you are not as comfortable as you should be in your home, Standard Insulating will come out and do a free consultation. They'll take a look at what you have and give you suggestions on what you can do for better insulation. They also offer programs that can cover the full cost or a portion of the what it will cost to replace your insulation systems.
"It's cold out and you don't want to find yourself in a position where it's freezing outside and your heating system quits," Gallagher said. "If you've got a unit that's 15 plus years older, call us to come take a look at it, we can let you know what it'll cost to replace it."
There are some do-it-yourself tips on how to insulate your home:
•You can cover any air leaks in your doors or windows with weatherproofing strips.
•Adding thick curtains to your windows can help contain the heat in your home.
•Covering up drafty doors will block any cold air from coming in.
•If you are not using your fire place for warmth, you can seal up your chimney.
There are a lot of different types of insulation and finding the right one will depend on your specific home style and situation.
