HERKIMER, NY – The Kuyahoora Cougars Pop Warner Cheerleaders celebrated the conclusion of a very successful season Monday evening.

The Cougars and their families gathered for an end of year banquette at the Waterfront Grille in Herkimer.

And what a year it was.

The Cougars cheerleading squad, made up of girls from West Canada Valley and Poland, took first place at the Pop Warner National

Cheer and Dance Competition in Orlando back in December.

More recently they took second place at the Globals Competition in Atlantic City.

Cougars head coach Laura Allen says after all the hard work the girls put in this year, don’t tell them cheerleading isn’t a sport.

“It’s definitely a sport. When you have girls that are holding other girls up over their heads, that takes a lot of work. When you have girls that are doing back walkovers and back handsprings, and when they’re jumping and their legs are coming up past their hips, that’s an athlete right there.”

Allen says next year the sky’s the limit for the girls.
