UTICA, N,Y. – Local labor groups have come together to start a fundraiser for the 585 workers laid off at Remington Outdoor Company in Ilion, so their families can still celebrate this holiday season.
The Central New York Labor Council, James R. Cook Labor Agency and the Workforce Development Institute have created a GoFundMe page to raise money for the United Mine Workers of America 717 union, which represents the former Remington employees.
According to the union, the workers did not receive promised severance or benefits from the company after they were terminated.
President of the CNY Labor Councile, Samantha DeRiso, says she hopes the community comes together to show support.
“During these uncertain times, the holiday season will certainly look different from what we are used to,” said DeRiso. “We need to support our brothers and sisters of UMWA Local 717 as they face seasonal expenses, professional transitions, and of course, the COVID-19 pandemic.”
