Lifting through adversity: following Jared's Journey

Back in March NEWSChannel 2 told you about Jared Wells, a 21-year-old local man with cystic fibrosis whose dream is to become a bodybuilder. After months of hard work and dedication, that dream is about to become a reality.

From a hospital bed to a gym rat, Jared's results go beyond what meets the eye.

"Probably a thousand times better than when you saw me last," said Wells. "Breathing has been absolutely amazing. Just my overall health is just beyond belief better."

"Jared's situation, he was against all odds," said Body Alive Fitness Center owner Bob Donnelly. "In our world impossible is nothing."

Even Jared's doctor have been impressed with his recovery.

"They’ve been blown away," said Wells. "I did a lung function test and my numbers came back better than I was two years ago. They never expected my numbers to come back. They said once I lose them, it’s really hard to get them back. I kind of did what they said was impossible."

When Jared first started his journey, he weighed 120 pounds. Now seven months later after all the training he's put on 35 pounds and it's the most he's ever weighed.

"Yeah, unheard of. I've never broken 140 before and now I'm 15 pounds above that."

"Bulking with Jared," said his trainer Aaron Usyk. "We're getting him bigger and obviously the videos and pictures from before to what he is now, he's come a long way. The biggest thing is the mindset. You just gotta be in the right mindset all the time and have a why, why you're doing it. Jared obviously has a very big reason why he's doing it.

He’s one of the hardest workers I have on my team right now. So it’s exciting to watch where he’s coming from and how much he’s grown to where he is now. He’s a strong as some of my biggest guys that I train right now it was a lot of fun working with them and watching him push himself push the limits."

On Saturday, November 10 Jared will compete in his first bodybuilding competition in Syracuse.

"I feel very confident going into this competition," said Wells. "I can't really make any complaints about it. The dieting kinda sucks but hopefully I can come out in first place or at least place."

"The biggest thing is just to have fun with it," added Usyk. "You gotta bring your best package to the stage and you cant prepare for anybody else but yourself."

"Nowadays they have different physique classes which is great so even the guy up-and-coming can still be competitive in a different class," said Donnelly.

By not giving up and following his dream, Jared continues to touch lives all across the world.

"Possibly one of the best feelings in the world to know that I can inspire others just by doing what I'm doing."
