A local veteran who was recently honored on National Vietnam War Veterans Day has died at age 68.
Frank Zaffarano died unexpectedly on Saturday, March 31, according to his obituary.
Zaffarano, who was born in Ilion in 1949, enlisted in the U.S. Navy Seabees with his twin brother, Leonard, following their high school graduation, and the brothers served in the Vietnam War together. Frank Zaffarano received his honorable discharge on Nov. 19, 1970.
The two brothers were among those honored at the Parkway Center in Utica on March 29 for National Vietnam War Veterans Day, and they were given pins for serving together in combat.
Frank Zaffarano received his degree in engineering from Mohawk Valley Community College after serving in the military, and he went on to work at Remington Arms for 32 years. He also worked for Craska Trucking and Heartland Express, and he was the commander of the Yorkville VFW Post 6001.
Zaffarano’s burial will be held with full military honors at Forest Hill Cemetery in Utica.
