NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. – In memory of a 14-year-old from Jefferson County who died from a football injury earlier this week, a local business owner is offering free stickers in his honor.
Joe Belmonte, owner of the Family Fun Factory in New Hartford, is giving away helmet stickers to teams who would like to wear them in support of Tyler Christman and his family. Tyler was a freshman at Carthage High School who was injured during a game on Saturday, Sept. 18. He died in the hospital on Tuesday from his injuries.
Belmonte says his son plays football as well, and Tyler's tragedy resonated with him and his family.
"It got started because my son plays for the modified team in New Hartford and he's 13 years old, so upon hearing this story. It really resonated and hit home with us. We had thought about doing it for his football team here in New Hartford and it just went from one coach to another coach. It kind of feels good to do something to recognize this student athlete and the family," said Belmonte.
More than 10,000 stickers have been handed out so far.
Anyone interested in getting stickers for themselves or their team can reach out to Belmonte at 315-404-2553.
